De Vries topped MLB Pipeline's Top 50 international prospects list for the 2024 signing period, at least until Roki Sasaki posted, and the Padres made it two years in a row that they signed the top prospect on that market, giving De Vries $4.2 million when that period opened. He was assigned aggressively, going straight to full-season ball, and he more than held his own, making impressive adjustments to take off in the second half and finishing things off as the youngest player in the Arizona Fall League to make up for some lost time due to a shoulder strain. A Futures Gamer in 2025, De Vries was in High-A when he was the centerpiece prospect sent to the A's in the Mason Miller Trade Deadline blockbuster, and he finished the year strong up in Double-A, going 8-for-19 with three homers over five playoff games.

Still only 19 for all of the 2026 season, De Vries has some serious offensive ability from both sides of the plate. One of the reasons the Padres felt comfortable pushing him to start his career was because of his advanced approach that belies his years, and he walked at a 12.3 percent clip in 2025 while limiting strikeouts, something he continued even when up in Double-A for the first time. He flipped his home run splits in 2025 compared to the previous year, and there is more natural loft from the left side, though he did turn on some pitches right-handed late in the year with Midland, and there's confidence he'll be productive both ways.

De Vries is athletic and an above-average runner and at times has shown the range and hands to play shortstop, but there are those in the industry who don't see that as a slam dunk. He did play some second during his AFL stint, but that's been his only exposure in games to another spot on the dirt. Even if he does have to move off of short, his combination of offensive upside, makeup, feel for the game and ability to rise to challenges still make him an elite prospect.
