Shelar is the latest prospect out of a Marist School (Atlanta) program that has produced seven big leaguers, most notably Kyle Farmer, and won 14 Georgia state championships. He's a physical player with an interesting combination of raw power and solid speed. The Red Sox selected him in the ninth round and lured him away from a Mississippi State commitment with a $1.5 million bonus.

Already 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Shelar projects to have well-above-average raw power thanks to his combination of bat speed, strength and leverage. He ranked second among all high schoolers with 19 homers in 33 games this spring. There are mixed opinions about his bat, with some scouts worrying about his ability to make consistent contact against pro pitching. He takes aggressive hacks with an unorthodox right-handed stroke that can get uphill.

If he does hit enough to tap into his pop, Shelar has the solid speed to become at least a 20-20 player. A center fielder in high school, he doesn't have a quick first step but covers ground once he gets going. He likely will wind up on a corner in the long run and has the arm strength and offensive profile to fit in right field.
